Nursing Program

Bev Plagenhoef, RN and Julie Mascorro, RN are nurses who work with the Children's Advocacy Center.  Both work for the Ottawa County Health Department and have been involved with the medical component at the Center since September of 1998.  The children who come to the Center for medical services are being examined for physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect.  The nurses are Medical Coordinators before, during, and after the exam, and their duties include obtaining needed medical history information before the exam, making them comfortable with the exam and room, taking vital signs, recording the doctor's findings on the charts, and preparing cultures for the lab.  After the exam, they provide follow-up on referrals, set up appointments for blood tests to be done at the Health Department, monitor the lab work, and contact families with the results of lab work.  They are also responsible for keeping the medical exam room and equipment in order.

Bev and Julie were asked to join the Children's Advocacy Center team because of their extensive experience working with children.  They enjoy working in this field because they believe in the importance of working collaboratively with agencies to better our community, and they have strong working relationships with many of our community resource agents.

Bev and Julie have received extensive training in forensic interviewing of children and have participated in many team training seminars and conferences regarding child sexual and physical abuse.  These talented nurses play a vital role in the care of healing of the children that we serve.
